Wild Duluth 50k Race Recap

Sea Bass —  October 20, 2013

Team UppercutWell the 50k is officially on the books!   Tony and I ran a respectable race for a couple of flat landers.   We ran strong and hard.  We both had our weak moments but lifted each other up and helped each other carry on.  We ran the race and we ran to win!

“Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize” -1 Corinthians 9:24-25.

We knew before we started that we would not come in first but we ran with the intent of winning anyway.  Tony and I had an interesting conversation after the race where he said why would anyone run a race like this for fun?   Why would they ever enter and not intend to win?The race of life very much parallels the race we just ran.  It is long and hard.  There are moments of wonder and euphoria and there are moments of pain and despair.   Continue Reading…

5k to 50k

Spring should appear any day now and as winter leaves us so do the excuses I have the ability to make to bypass a run or skip a workout.  Now weather will not be a factor and a good many hours are about to be logged in the great out doors.  The kids are already outside every chance they get and so the volume of television being watched is in a steady decline.  This leads me to the decision to Continue Reading…

Passion for the Pain

5k to 50k dirtMonday night I went out for a 5 mile run. This was after doing the longest run of this cold spring the day before of 11.5 miles.  The pain I felt with each step was pushing my limits.  Then add in the fact the sun had gone down and there was a brisk cold wind pushing in our last “winter storm” of the year and running suddenly did not seem like a good idea.  Every corner we turned the wind seemed to keep blowing in our face.  Tony and I had already set out and after about 5 minutes of complaining about how my legs felt they were going to snap in half at mid shin and how cold the wind was I decided to shut my mouth and press on.  Continue Reading…

5K to 50K – Clinging to Faith

5k to 50kAfter finishing the Tough Mudder with more ease than I thought, my second goal of running a half marathon in the Fall of this year as the next event on my bucket list, all of a sudden seems a bit too easy.   After talking to Tony “The Cyborg” Thoma, I have decided to train for a 50K race in the fall of 2013.  Pastor Aaron has asked us to chronicle our journey in a blog, so here goes.

It is a beautiful but highly challenging race held in Duluth, MN.  You can see the details here:  Wild Race Duluth.  I would like to invite anyone else interested to join up with Cyborg and I in this journey.  It is a very large commitment and will not be easy.

At this stage the thoughts are… Continue Reading…
